Okay, this is hardly groundbreaking news anymore, but further proof that the book publishing industry is changing at a breathtaking pace has to be in the recent explosion of electronic readers. Canada, for a number of somewhat foggy logistical and political reasons, seems to have lagged behind the States in this regard, but just before this last Christmas Amazon FINALLY got the go ahead to release their Kindle electronic reader product in this country. We've had the Sony Reader already for quite a while and evidently their sales have been brisk enough to create a waiting list of thousands for their more expensive product. But the Kindle IS indeed the cream of the crop, so when it came available I quickly ordered it as a present for the Mrs.
It was a great call, and if you haven't checked them out yet, I'd recommend that you have a look at Amazon's video on it - it's definaitely all that it's cracked up to be.
My favorite part of the Kindle is the adjustable text size feature. Now that we're both a little older, we have a bit of trouble decyphering the small print of a lot of today's books, especially the paperbacks, and it is so much easier to read the Kindle.
Also, an unexpected bonus was that a Kindle application for our Ipods was available for free, meaning we could access books previously purchased by us on the Kindle and also read them on our Ipod's. Surprisingly, since the Ipod's are in color (the Kindle is in black and white), the reading experience might even be a little better.
